So you're looking to start feeding your baby other foods to introduce them to all the flavors and textures of the world to enjoy. If your baby is 6 months or more, it may be time to start weaning your baby off of breastmilk. Here atNosh, we want to break it down for you.
The process starts when you begin introducing foods other than breastmilk or formula to your baby. On average it is good to start this process around 6 months old, as weaning too early can be dangerous to the baby’s digestive system, which is not yet fully developed. TheWHO recommends introducing solids as an addition to breastmilk at 6 months, and that by 8 months babies can start eating finger foods. By 12 months, a baby can eat most foods.
Breastfeeding and formula both offer the needed nutrients for the first 6 months of your baby’s life: breastmilk is a great source ofvitamin D, as it is more difficult to attain the needed vitamin D from food alone. If breastfeeding, the mother should still take vitamin D supplements; if using formula, vitamin D is usually already added.
Another reason why you should wait to start weaning your baby until around 6 months is for the baby’s development. The 6 months mark is usually around the time your baby develops good hand-eye coordination, and therefore they can begin to self feed. There are3 signs to look for that indicate it may be time to start weaning your baby:
