Kid-Friendly, Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Ideas
Halloween is just a week away, so this morning I took the kids on a drive around our block to scope out all of our neighbors’ decorations.
Zombies. Monsters. Ghosts. Ugh.
My husband and I have always hated Halloween, because both of us really hate scary stuff, and it turns out that my kids seem to have taken after us. All four of us are all about the treats, but none of us is about the tricks.
If you’re like us and really can’t stand the scary stuff, but are throwing a Halloween party for your kids and their friends, here are some of my favorite ideas that keep the screams to a minimum and the laughs to the max.
Costume Contest.I obviously couldn’t have a list of this nature without including a costume contest. You can have several categories/awards, even, to ensure that as many kids as possible end up with a prize. (Feel free, if you’re a softie like me, to make up awards on the fly to hand out awards to every person there.)
Halloween Taboo! Grab a bunch of pumpkin stickers, and make a list of Halloween-related words (“candy,” “costume,” “trick,” “treat,” and so forth). Every time someone says one of the words on the list, put a Halloween sticker on them. The person who has the least stickers at the end of the night wins a prize!
Pin the Stem on the Pumpkin. A Halloween spin on the classic Pin the Tail on the Donkey. See also: Pin the Skull on the Skeleton, if you’re braver than I am.
Guess how much Halloween candy is in the jar.Bonus (evil) points if you choose a really small candy, like Smarties or M&M’s. Make them really work for it!
DIY Jack-o-Lantern party favors.Get a bunch of mini-pumpkins from your local pumpkin patch and pick up a few packs of black permanent markers. Have your guests sit down and draw Jack-o-Lantern faces on the pumpkins that they can take home!
What are your favorite not-so-scary Halloween party ideas? Remember, my idea of “The Walking Dead” is what I look like when I have to work all day after the toddler has been up all night with a fever.
Happy treating, everyone!
